Sawflies are able to feed on this famously toxic plant, which is out of boundaries for the majority of inverterbrates and vertebrates. For example, one of them, Rhadinoceraea nodicornis is known to successfully consume the European false hellebore V. album and sequester the toxic alkaloids, thus protecting itself from predators. The eastern North American species is R. nubilipennis.
