April 16,
Garden-in-the-Woods, Framingham
This small tree belongs to the mainly Eurasiatic genus; ironwood is the only North American species. The picturesque "corrugated" trunks are readily recognizable in rich woods and swamps. Hornbeams often would not grow larger than tall shrubs. Those with bluish gray bark once were segregated by M.L. Fernald in var. virginiana.
