Schneider named the hybrid oak for John Saul (1819-1897), an Irishman by birth, who lived in the US from 1851, started as A. J. Downing's helper, worked on improvements of the White House, Capitol, and Smithsonian grounds in Washington, became a prominent American nurseryman and horticulturist, and died at his nursery.
