August 21, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton
Characteristic lacy silhouette of the only native large-tree willow in New England. Its narrow thin leaves are typically drooping, making twigs look one-sided, each leaf at tips of youngest twigs visible from afar. This produces a delicate, airy habit, which helps recognize black willow from the distance. Another name of black willow is "swamp willow," as it prefers wet habitats.
