Catkins of rusty willow are very large and attractive. Due to these pretty catkins, rusty willow fits well the spoken name of "pussy," the name that has produced the confusion, as it is fully applicable to a rather large group of willows with similar catkins, including S. discolor the native "pussy." Notice the black bracts that look similar in "rusty pussy" and the native S. discolor.
