The leaves develop not on the main stem, but rather on extremely long lateral stems that remain unbranched on much of their length. Sometimes these stems are considered as petioles. The stem may start to branch only below the water surface and below the leaf blade. At this point the plant produces a cluster of adventitious roots, from which the inflorescence develops.
