Beech-drops (as well as cancer-root) belong to those few Orobanchaceae genera that are endemic for North America. As its Latin name suggests, this parasitic plant grows on beech roots. It produces branched spikes of purplish flowers and scattered leafy bracts. Photo credit Luba Batuner
