Terminal buds oblong, 1-2 cm long, sulfur yellow to tan, densely glandular with microscopic-size yellow peltate (rounded) glands, pilose near apex. Terminal bud scales 2 or 4, valvate (non-overlapping), each looking like a miniature leaf. Axillary buds protected by a pair of valvate bracteoles (prophylls) fused into hood or not fused. Twig is also glandular-scaly near tip; otherwise glabrous.
