A weedy prostrate to ascending annual of uncertain origin, probably a native of American Tropics that has quickly spread to temperate regions. Archeological data testify, at least on one occasion, that it was already present in temperate North America during the pre-colonial time. Its leaves of variable size form pseudo-whorls, and tiny flowers are lacking petals (what looks like petals, are actually sepals).
