Myles Standish State Forest, Plymouth
The tree shown in the previous photo--now during the summer. European larch is frequent in Massachusetts. This is the only widely introduced larch from the Old World, as other Eurasian larches (as well as the native tamarack) all need wetland conditions and many also require colder, continental climate. Due to its ability to grow on mesic/dry soil and adaptability to climate situations, this larch, whose native range is in the Alps and Caucasus, has become THE European larch in North America.
