Common bur-reed is a hydrophyte of muddy or sandy edges of ponds and brooks. Often it produces pioneer colonies on newly formed substrates. Bur-reed belongs to its own monotypic family with some 20 species, mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Sometimes bur-reeds are included in Typhaceae .
