September 12, Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Granby
Each achene surrounded by three tepals, one of them larger than the other two and, with a significant degree of imagination, resembling pilos, or pileus--a tall brimless cap of Ancient Greece and Rome later known as Phrygian Cap--hence the name Pilea (see comments to P. pumila). A shiny, smooth unripe achene present here at lower left.
