A population growing in an unusual situation--nested in cracks of seasonally flooded massive sandstone slabs at the bed margin of the Connecticut River. As to the range of habitats that this aster is able to populate, it is very broad. The Flora of North America lists the following environmental conditions: "dry to humid soils, usually deciduous woodlands (beech–maple, oak–hickory, mixed hardwoods), sometimes coniferous woods, swamp forests (coniferous or deciduous), edges of woods, meadows, usually rocky or sandy stream and pond shores, roadsides."
