April 19,
Middlesex Fells Reservation, Medford
A rare plant in eastern Massachusetts, bloodroot is an ephemeroid plant of rich woods. It spends most of the year underground as a rhizome, coming out to the day surface to bloom and disperse seed for a short while in spring, when there is still plenty of light in hardwood forest. Flowers need full light: they close in the shade and at night.
