In FNA and MA Checklist 2011, the infraspecific taxa within this species are listed as varieties, however, each with its own geographic range. They thus would be better described as subspecies. Six varieties were recognized in FNA; the corresponding six combinations for subspecies were produced back in 1967 by Traub & Ownbey: Pl. Life (Stanford) 23: 110 (1967).
