A Euro-Siberian species. Winter buds fusiform, that is, spindle-shaped--tapering toward either end; bud scales hairy. This lineage (15142) originates from Austria (received from Prof. Alfred Rehder); planted on Peter's Hill, between the small cemetery dating back to the Revolutionary War and Mendum Gate.
