New Grassy Pond. Elongate spikelets. Fernald distinguished this coastal variety specifically in eastern Massachusetts (as well as south of this area to southeastern VA). A more recent treatment in the Flora of North America collectively produced by four authors does not distinguish any varieties within this species; instead it describes spikelets of E. obtusa as variable: from broadly ovoid to ellipsoid or lanceoloid.
