An 'S4' (not very common) plant known mostly from western/central Massachusetts, growing there on dry to mesic, circumneutral substrates in forests and woodlands (according to Flora Novae Angliae). Among members of the huge genus, only a handful species produce hairy leaf blades, and this unusual character is always highlighted in their names.
