A stemmed pale purple violet with a large spur; in Massachusetts growing in western/central counties, reaching east to Middlesex and Essex, absent from southeastern part of state. Varieties formerly recognized were var. adunca of wide North American distribution and var. bellidifolia found (in addition to the previous var.) only in British Columbia, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming.
