Flowering part nodding at summit; leaves basally disposed (progressively reduced upward); stems and leaves glabrous; leaves not fleshy; flowering heads with not more than 12 rays; stems prominently angled; leaves scabrous on underside. Must have been intentionally introduced along with many other plantings. Plants not as robust as in var. patula; distal (upper) leaves reduced to bracts and basal leaves smaller than in var. patula.
