April 17,
Lower Leaping Brook, South Hadley
Species named after Joseph-Marie Callery (1810–1862), who sent a sample of this tree from China to Europe. Cultivar 'Bradford' named for the USDA horticulturist F.C. Bradford (1888-1950), who started work on developing a Callery pear cultivar in 1950 in Glenn Dale, MD. First sold in nurseries in 1960, the tree was presented as a few self-incompatible cultivars. Beside 'Bradford,' the common ones are 'Aristocrat', 'Autumn Blaze', 'Chanticleer' (='Cleveland Select'), and 'Redspire.' This and next photographs were taken in spring of 2026 along Leaping Well Nature Trail off Mosier Street (next to Mosier Elementary School).
