October 14,
Mount Everett State Reservation, Mount Washington
Mountain holly hardly reaches Massachusetts, present here only in the extreme southwest, in a small area in Mount Washington, MA--a disjunct fragment of its rather large range in eastern United States. Because it is at its northern limit in MA, mountain holly is state-listed (Endangered). It looks much like winterberry holly, only taller, typically forming a small tree and occurring in drier and shadier habitats.
