Three stages of liverwort development. Developing perianth (on gametophyte, green, at left) is more rounded than in F. eboracensis, not quite so "square-shouldered." The round dark structure in center growing from another perianth is a ripe sporangium (sporophyte generation) still sitting on top of its gametophyte, as it happens in every liverwort and moss. Finally, at right there is an open sporangium that has already dispersed spores.
