Drooping racemes of flowers on second-year shoots. Differently from Japanese barberry, this species is highly susceptible to Puccinia graminis, a fungus whose alternate host is wheat. Because of that, European barberry has been eradicated during a special campaign, so that now it is much less frequent in the US than Japanese barberry.
