Leaf lobes may be more or less pronounced--to the extent when they nearly disappear, though each vein is terminating with a tiny papilla marking a lobe at the leaf margin. Short and blunt papillas are different from longer, sharper bristles (bristles are present in oaks belonging to the other group, that of "red oaks"). Leaves on short petioles, cuneate (wedge-shaped) at base.
