With its counterpart from the red oak group, Q. ilicifolia at right, for comparison. Both shrubby oaks, scrub and dwarf chestnut oak are present in all of Massachusetts counties, though dwarf chestnut oak is more coastal. There is a better chance to find it in Myles Standish SF than in the Blue Hills Res., and better yet--on Cape Cod. Scrub oak appears to be common everywhere where there are appropriate habitats--well lighted, with poor acid soil on rocky or sandy substrates.
