Sea lavender belongs to a large genus that includes more than 200 species distributed on all the continents, particularly in arid and saline habitats. The entire family Plumbaginaceae is known to contain many halophytic plants, i.e., those that can tolerate high salinity--inhabitants of mangroves, arid solonchucks of Central Asia, or Mediterranean dry islands.
