Beach heather is different from golden heather in its sessile flowers and hoary tomentum that obscures its small leaves. Though both species generally grow in sandy habitats, beach heather prefers the ocean front, while golden heather occurs in pine barrens away from the ocean. Both have similar geographical ranges within Massachusetts, being restricted to the eastern counties.
