Megacyllene robiniae
locust borer
September 2,
Blue Hills Reservation, Milton
The beautiful yellow- and black-patterned locust borer (family
Cerambycidae) is called so because its larvae feed on wood of live black locust. This is the latest long-horned
beetle to emerge in the season. From late August to late October, adults may be found feeding
on goldenrod flowers. They become inconspicuous when resting on flowers of the similar
shade of yellow. Wherever black locust is located close to flowering goldenrod, it makes sense to look for these colorful
beetles.
