The primary host plant (where the eggs are laid) is silver maple Acer saccharinum. Winged insects hatch in spring and migrate to alder, their secondary host. There they form colonies along branches (this one found on smooth alder Alnus serrulata). Adults are quite large, brownish, all covered with a thick layer of white woolly wax.
