Koyamaki is one of the most fascinating of all conifers. A so-called living fossil, it stands alone, one species in one genus in its own family, with no close living relatives and with a fossil record that tracks its ancestors back about 230 million years (Farjon 2008). The peculiar arrangement of its leaves is unique among conifers (Yates et al. 2019).
