In olden times appearance of a plant served as a hint for its useful properties. Mottled leaves of this common European plant resemble lungs with their air-filled alveoli--especially because the light spots are caused by air-filled gaps in the leaf tissue; hence the Latin name 'Pulmonaria,' common name 'lungwort,' and multiple applications for treatment of respiratory ailments. Planted in Buxton Gardens.
