Swamp loosestrife is capable of producing bulbils (organs of asexual reproduction) of this unusual shape instead of flowers. Even Linnaeus was deceived by their appearance and described them as "terrestrial mistletoe" (as normally mistletoe would grow high up in trees). The Latin epithet of the species remains terrestris since then.
