Ripening chokeberry fruit are turning dark purple, but only for a short while, then promptly becoming black; at the same time, some of its leaves are turning bright orange. Because of these bright-colored leaves, chokeberry becomes noticeable from the distance starting from mid-summer. Black chokeberry is the earliest to produce fruits, as compared to purple and red chokeberry.
