Fruit of Rubus is aggregate: developing from a flower containing many individual ovaries, each ovary growing into a drupelet with a single seed. Differently from blackberries, aggregate fruits of raspberries are detached leaving receptacle (their tasteless core) behind on the plant, so raspberries generally taste better than blackberries. In black raspberry, individual drupelets are separated by bands of tomentum (hairy bands); dry styles often retained on ripe drupelets, though easily falling off; seeds rather large (more than 2 mm long), reticulate-pitted, semi-globular or D-shaped, colored tan (those visible here are red with drupe juice).
