One of a few short poles marking a property boundary along the road. The owner merely took down a row of planted locust, leaving the useful stumps (photographed in 2012). Black locust is well known as durable material for poles and fences. Indeed it was due to useful properties of its wood, that the aggressive tree was introduced to New England. Now that it has become invasive here, it is seldom put to use. Yet it remains unsurpassed, cheap, readily available material for small wood construction projects.
