Once the seeds ripen, the five green sepals open: the seeds are now ready to be dispersed--shot around. The fruit is a mericarp consisting of 5 parts. Each part produces a single seed (all five brown seeds with veiny surface are visible at the base of the column). Resembling a crane's bill, this structure is depicted in the widespread common name.
