June 21, Hewitts Cove, Hingham
The fruit is 5-parted schizocarp with an explosive type of dispersal mechanism. In the center, there is a long column, to which 5 long "hangers" are attached, each of them connected to a single seed at base of column. When seeds are ripe, the hangers detach from the column (though remaining attached at their summits) and abruptly curl upward. At this point, the seeds are ejected with such a force that allows them to fly up to 6 meters away.
