Buttonbush is a dense shrub that grows in shallow water at pond edges or in swamps. Its slender white flowers are arranged in showy spherical heads. Though it is an eastern North-American plant, occidentalis stands for 'western,' that is, the buttonbush of the New World. Other buttonbushes exist in Asia and Africa.
