Buttonbush is a dense shrub that grows in shallow water at pond margins, brook banks, or in swamps. Its slender white flowers are arranged in showy spherical heads. Though it is an eastern North American plant, occidentalis stands for 'western,' that is, the buttonbush of the New World. Other species exist in Asia and Africa.
