This exotic fertile honeysuckle is a result of hybridization between two introduced species: European and Japanese. It might have arisen both in cultivation and spontaneously, in the wild. Zabel first reported and described the hybrid in cultivation in 1889. (Morrow's honeysuckle had been introduced in 1854.)
