May 20, Leary Conservation Area, Bourne, Cape Cod
Developing shoot with a true leaf at center. True leaves are variable in shape but always small, some only a few millimeters long, losing chlorophyll early and turning scarious (papery), positioned at nodes, triangular, spurred; spurs sometimes extended into spines ("spurs slightly spinescent or indistinct," according to the Flora of China).
