Lower pinnules on the lowest pinna grow "out of order": the second one (counting from the rachis) is longer than the first one. This character is not always consistently pronounced (in this case it is obvious only on the right side). This is an evergreen fern, although its fronds seldom remain as fresh at the end of winter as at the start.
