June 15, Purgatory Swamp, Norwood
The mid-June 2005 outburst of caterpillars in Massachusetts woods was a massive multi-species defoliation event that stripped over 240,000 acres of forest canopy, primarily affecting southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, the South Shore, and parts of western Massachusetts. Entomologists at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst noted at the time that they had not seen a population explosion like that over more than 20 years. The major attackers were the usual ones: winter moth, spongy moth (then called Gypsy moth), and the forest tent caterpillar.
