Sterile leaves of Christmas fern survive prostrate on the ground during the winter. Erect fertile fronds emerge in spring and live only through the warm season. In a sense, Christmas fern is an antipode of sensitive fern, in which things go the opposite way: sterile fronds live only through the summer and fertile ones overwinter.
