Our subspecies is tetraploid. It has a wider range compared to the other subspecies (ssp. occidentalis), which is diploid occurring in a few southern states (Ark., Kans., Mo., Okla., Tex.), that is, at the western limit of the species continuous range (hence the name occidentalis).
