Rattlesnake fern is the largest and earliest of grapeferns, also most widespread and common in the United States. Grapeferns produce each just a single leaf consisting of two parts: sterile trophophore and fertile sporophore. Here, the trophophore is fully developed, while the young sporophore is just starting its growth from about the base of the sessile trophophore.
