Common juniper is probably the only woody species common for the Old and New World, though on the American side of the Atlantic it seldom grows as a tree. When looking at a juniper clone, one can interpret it as a single large tree prostrate on the ground, its limbs hidden under the wood litter, so only tips of branches produce foliage.
