Boxelder is a small dioecious tree native in the southeastern US, reaching north to western New England. It has been cultivated and naturalized beyond its natural range. In Massachusetts it mostly grows as a shrub. Its flowers start to develop earlier than the leaves, though finally open together with the leaves.
