Woolly alder aphids Prociphilus tessellatus, whose primary host plant (one on which eggs are laid) is silver maple Acer saccharinum. Winged insects hatch in spring and migrate to alder, their secondary host. There they form colonies along branches. Adults are quite large, brownish, all covered with a thick layer of white woolly wax.
